Tax assumptions and limitations
This application provides automated tax defaults based on commonly accepted place-of-supply rules for invoicing services. It is designed to assist freelancers and small businesses but does not constitute tax, legal, or accounting advice.
Scope of tax logic
The system currently supports invoice issuers based in:
- Ireland (EU VAT area)
- United Kingdom
- United States
Tax logic is optimised for services (e.g. consulting, professional services, digital services). Goods, distance selling thresholds, triangulation, and import VAT are out of scope.
How tax (VAT, Sales) is determined
VAT or sales tax treatment is derived automatically from:
- Issuer country
- Customer country
- Presence or absence of a customer VAT ID (B2B vs B2C)
Users do not manually select VAT regimes (e.g. OSS, reverse charge).
EU issuers (e.g. Ireland)
- Domestic invoices apply local VAT.
- Intra-EU B2B services apply reverse charge (VAT 0%).
- Intra-EU B2C services apply customer-country VAT under the One Stop Shop (OSS), where applicable.
- Supplies to customers outside the EU are treated as outside the scope of EU VAT.
UK issuers
- UK VAT rules are applied based on HMRC place-of-supply guidance.
- OSS does not apply to UK issuers.
- Many non-UK supplies of services are treated as outside the scope of UK VAT.
US issuers
- The United States does not operate a VAT system.
- Sales tax rules vary by state and locality.
- The application does not attempt to automate US sales tax and instead allows manual tax rate entry where required.
User responsibility
Users are responsible for:
- Verifying that the generated invoice complies with their local tax obligations
- Determining whether additional registration, reporting, or evidence requirements apply
- Tax rates, rules, and interpretations may change over time.
For complex scenarios or uncertainty, users should consult a qualified tax professional or local tax authority.
